Before we begin, I must state that if the Paranormal "Sciences" are to be taken seriously, then the researchers must begin to act seriously. They must begin to use accepted scientific research methods, and be open in reporting their findings. Documentation of their work must be impeccable, and open to questioning. That said, I here state some questions any "fan" of the Warrens should ask before accepting their findings.
1. Why is there no bibliography in any of their books? A perfect example is Ghosthunters. Research was obviously done, especially in "The Haunted Village", and "West Point." Yet no one is credited as a source--no books or people. Why? Before you say "ask them," I again state that I have asked them--and their nephew Jeff Zaffis.
2. Why do the Warrens continually state that an exorcism was "sanctioned" by the Catholic Church even though they know that no lay person is authorized to perform Priestly duties? While I am aware of the special prayer that the church has for lay people, the Warrens imply that the church has allowed them to do an actual Exorcism--which, I can assure you, it would not do.
NOTE: For some time I had stated that Fr. McKenna, a former Catholic Priest that the Warrens sometimes used, was "defrocked". I have since found that my sources were incorrect. Father McKenna left the Catholic Church voluntarily and united with another church, and is now a fully ordained Reformed Priest. While questions may arise as to why he did this, it is not unusual. Many Priests in the Episcopal, and my own Church (Anglican) are, in fact, former Roman Catholic Priests. I apologize for any misinformation and inconvenience this may have caused.
3. Why do the Warrens continually find "demon infestation" as the cause of 90% of the Paranormal investigations they do? This, as a clergyman, I find very dangerous. If the Warrens are as devout as they claim to be, then they know what they are dealing with--true servants of Satan. This is a job not left to the unknowledgeable, but to the church. I hear complaints all the time that the "church is ignoring them." The church is not ignoring anyone. Exorcisms are being done today. The fact is, the church is well aware now of mental illness, and is very aware that much of the "possessions" today are the result of things not known of before. It just wants to know that if they send a Priest to deal with the Devil, and risk his life, it is very sure of what it is dealing with.
4. Why does Lorraine state that (this depends on when she is quoted) that the "prime time" for manifestations/possessions/fill in the blank occurs between 9pm-3am? (the time varies by whom she is quoted) IF Ghosts are really departed spirits, why do we place a time restriction on them? The bible doesn't, and some of the classic accepted haunts have occurred at all times-even during the day. See below for a fuller discussion.
5. Why do most (estimated 95%) of manifestations (of all paranormal occurrences) with the Warrens happen without an "outside observer?" Notice Satans Harvest. Things happen right after a cop leaves! (pages 193-194) (by the way, read a review of the book http://www.sff.net/people/doylemacdonald/r_sahar.htmI think you find it interesting) This happens all the time in their books. Why? In the bible, everything Jesus did occurred in broad daylight--he cast out demons, cured folk, fed thousands, and raised people from the dead directly in front of crowds. Yet with the Warrens, we put time restrictions, and no witnesses. Odd.
6. Why do the Warrens keep a "possessed" doll in their Museum. In fact, why do they have a Museum at all? For the Good Lord's sake, here is a doll that is "possessed by an evil spirit", and he puts it on display and charges admission to see it? Reason is sent reeling! The Warrens spend a large amount of time in their books warning us about the dangers of the Quija Board and dabbling in the occult, (which I admire them for--I agree with them on that point) and they have a Museum? Wouldn't it be better, Ed and Lorraine, to lock the doll up somewhere--or, even better, get a Priest to exorcise it? Or, here is one: send it to the "Amazing Randi" and claim the $1,000,000 prize he is offering for proof of the Paranormal? There--a chance to put all of us skeptics to shame! PROVE IT!
7. Why do the Warrens encourage people to break the law? Yes, they do. Ed and Lorraine are in full knowledge that Dudleytown is OFF LIMITS to non-residents, yet they post full directions to it on their web site. Why? It is not public property. Ed himself was removed in 2000, he knows it. Yet, the directions are still there. They are fully aware of the interest, and what will happen to their readers, listeners, and supporters if people go. They have been asked by a number of people to remove them--and they haven't. Why?
8. Ed has repeatedly stated that he has additional pictures of Amityville that are quite convincing. Yet, he refuses to show them or submit them to investigation. Why? For an example of this, Click www.theness.com/articles/warrens-cs0203.html the link.
9. Why do they accuse people of always trying to find inconsistencies in their books, and why do so many other noted Parapsychologists dispute them? I have an answer for them--inconsistencies are to easy to find! Even their books contradict each other (compare The Devil in Connecticut to their account in Ghosthunters!) Many of the Paranormal Groups in New England broke off from the Warrens, all citing similar things: Ed's bossiness, exaggeration of facts, his obscene language, (apparently Ed has quite a mouth...a lot of folks have mentioned it--see the above review of Satans Harvest for an example) etc etc. I am afraid that if they want it to stop, then they have to clean up their act.
There are other questions we should ask, some have been mentioned other places on this site. I may update this page later, but for now I would ask you, gentle reader, to reflect on these questions--and if you ever get a chance to see Ed (please pray for his recovery) or Lorraine, or any of their "fans", ask them!
